Gary Schwartz is the Executive Vice President for North Star Resource Group. North Star represents a fully integrated array of financial services and products for individuals and businesses. Over 150 financial advisors and their teams serve 120,000+ clients in 23 states. They are a leader in providing financial services to medical, dental and legal professionals. Gary provides professional consulting services to associates on developing teams and composite practices, succession planning and overall executive leadership. He also specializes in providing experienced advisor coaching services and developing practice management analytics designed to improve practice productivity and effectiveness.
Practice on Purpose - Achieve the Financial Advice Practice You Desire and Your Clients Deserve was published in June 2014. Gary joined together with Phil Richards and Ed Deutschlander in authoring this leading practice management resource. The book was launched at the 2014 GAMA Thailand and AFA Conference in Singapore. The premise of the book is to raise the sense of purpose and value an advisor can achieve with their practice. This includes how to attract and retain clients who want a superior experience in a well-run client service model, capturing financial advice as its own value, reaching a million dollar sustainable revenue practice and executing a successful business continuation plan that recognized the equity value of the practice. Practice on Purpose reframes the advisor experience.
Gary received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota in Business Administration where he was active as a Martin Luther King Economics tutor, elected to the Business Board, the student governing board of the business school and was selected for the all university student leadership award. He subsequently received a Masters in Industrial Psychology also from the University of Minnesota.
He started his career with Minnesota Mutual Life in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He was subsequently assigned to the Seattle Regional Group Office as a Registered Representative. After several years of successful selling experience, he returned to the home office as a Human Resources professional. He eventually became the Director of Human Resources Planning and responsible for all home office and sales force recruiting and selection. He was promoted to Vice President, Field Management and Development for the Securian Financial Network, the individual distribution system for Minnesota Life. He directed the field management and sales promotion function for 60 regional firms and 1,200 advisors.
In 2002, he joined what became Ameriprise Financial as the Franchise Field Vice President for the Twin Cities. He was responsible for the Independent Advisor platform in its flagship territory. He built it to 250 franchise advisors and 100 associate advisors. These advisors produced $135 million of gross revenue in 2011, led Ameriprise in financial planning and produced an average CAGR of 22% over each of the prior three years. They were collectively entrusted with over $12 Billion in assets and served 150,000+ clients.
He was responsible for providing sales leadership, advisor recruiting, practice management coaching, compliance supervision and client acquisition strategies. As chair of national committee on Field Leadership effectiveness, he developed partnering groups and high performance teams for senior financial advisors. He was selected by the senior leadership team for the 2005 Outstanding Leader Award. His territory was perennially in the top 5 of the 21 territories and was number one 3 of his 10 years in the role. They had an average of 97% advisor retention over this time period. He also developed 16 practices that exceeded over one million of gross revenue from only having one in 2005. This was accomplished through teaming, aggressive asset and client acquisition strategies, succession planning and practice branding.
He is a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) from the American College and a Certified Retirement Planning Consultant (CRPC) from the College for Financial Planning. He is an adjunct Professor Emeritus for the University of Saint Thomas Graduate School of Business where he taught the course Financial Services in the 21st Century. He is past Chair of LIMRA's Career Agency Building Committee, Securians's Ambassador and Diplomat to GAMA International and Presenter at the GAMA/LAMP meeting on Coaching Experienced Advisors.
Gary and his family live in Prior Lake, Minnesota. They enjoy travel, lake activities, outdoor sports, and reading. Gary has an older son who is married and lives in Seattle.
