Our name is derived from the unique organizational structure of resources in our firm. Our financial professionals have immediate access to numerous subject-matter specialists on everything from life insurance to investments to employee benefits.

Our history

Our roots trace back to 1908, when a small office with a handful of financial advisors opened in downtown St. Paul, Minn. Since our founder and executive chairperson, Phil Richards, acquired North Star in 1969, we have been on a steady path of growth and diversification to serve our clients better.

Giving back

In 2004, established the Scott Richards North Star Foundation to maximize charitable donations, promising to donate 10% of annual revenue a year, totaling $6.3 million to date. Through this commitment, we have joined in the mission of hundreds of nonprofits around the world, including establishing two endowed chairs for Alzheimer’s research at Temple University, partnering with BestPrep for financial literacy for students, and hosting an annual bike giveaway with our teams.
