Temple University Announces Creation of Alzheimer’s Center with Gift from Phil Richards and Scott Richards North Star Foundation
The gift will allow Temple University to establish both the Scott Richards North Star Foundation Chair for Alzheimer’s Research at Temple and the Alzheimer’s Center.
BRYN MAWR, Pa. — Temple University has announced the creation of the Alzheimer’s Center at Temple and the establishment of the Scott Richards North Star Foundation Chair for Alzheimer’s Research, due to a gift from Phil Richards and the Scott Richards North Star Foundation. Richards, North Star Resource Group’s Executive Chairman and Founder, is a Temple University trustee and alumnus of Temple’s Fox School of Business.
“We are extremely proud and humbled to receive this generous gift from Phil Richards and the Scott Richards North Star Foundation,” said Larry R. Kaiser, MD, FACS, Dean at Lewis Katz School of Medicine and President and CEO of Temple University Health System. “This strategic investment will pay dividends not just to Temple, but to society – well beyond our lifetimes – funding cutting-edge basic science research, clinical studies, and innovative educational programs for new generations of researchers.”
Domenico Praticò, MD, Professor of Pharmacology, Microbiology and Immunology, and Professor in the Center of Translational Medicine at Lewis Katz School of Medicine, has been announced as the first occupant of the chair. Dr. Praticò joined Temple in 2007 and currently leads the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Program. He is internationally known for his work on Alzheimer’s disease, brain health, aging and neurodegeneration, having authored more than 240 original articles and 25 book chapters. The Alzheimer’s Center at Temple (ACT) will integrate research, training, clinical and educational activities in order to study Alzheimer’s disease. Currently the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., there are more than five million Americans living with the disease. The ACT will seek to study the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease, discover what causes the onset and progression, and develop effective treatment options with the ultimate goal of curing those diseases.
