2017 was a year of change and innovation at North Star Resource Group. Our brand refresh, which took place at the end of July, was at the center of our changes—but that’s just the beginning of all that occurred throughout the past year.
With three new records, 2016’s performance indicates that growth is a high priority within North Star.
North Star started off the year by marking three records set in the previous year: our recruiting and professional development teams reported 109 internship starts, 35 apprenticeship starts and 24 resident starts in 2016. North Star hopes to grow to over 250 financial advisors by the year 2022.
The book focuses on reigniting the passion for life insurance.
February brought the official release of Promises Kept, a book authored by North Star CEO Ed Deutchlander, Senior Vice President Shaun McDuffee, and Executive Chairman and Founder Phil Richards. The book tells the story of life insurance and how views of the product have evolved over decades, complete with 18 firsthand accounts on how life insurance has changed lives.
Schwartz most recently held the role of Senior Vice President of Advisor Growth & Development since 2013.
Gary Schwartz was announced as Executive Vice President of North Star Resource Group in February. With 42 years of experience in the financial industry, Schwartz is an experienced leader and advisor coach, author of Practice on Purpose, and international speaker.
Winners of TeamWomenMN’s WaveMaker Awards Celebration were announced at a ceremony on February 9, 2017.
Kristin Brandli Printon, Partner & Financial Consultant at Moxie Wealth Management, a strategic partner with North Star Resource Group, has been announced as the Winner of TeamWomenMN’s WaveMaker award. “WaveMakers” are defined as those who demonstrate outstanding achievement, an entrepreneurial spirit and initiative through leadership within both their profession and community.
The blood drive was held in partnership with the American Red Cross.
North Star held its Annual Blood Drive in partnership with the American Red Cross on March 7, 2017 at the Minneapolis, MN headquarters, coordinated by COO Diane Yohn. North Star has been hosting blood drives for advisors and team members since 2009. In response, North Star received the following email from an individual who has received blood donations in the past: “I want your employees to know how very direct an impact their generosity has made in our lives. I am so very thankful to each and every one of them.”
The awards recognized 25 up-and-comers in Distribution dedicated to making a difference.
Damon Lichtenberger, CLTC, Partner, Senior Financial Advisor and Associate Vice President based in North Star’s Durham, NC office, was chosen as one of LIMRA’s 25 Rising Stars in Distribution of 2017. The winners were selected from a pool of young professionals under 40 dedicated to making a difference and staying up to date with advancements in the financial services industry.
Tsang spoke on the shift to advice based planning and its relevance in the financial services industry today.
Stephanie Tsang, CFP®, Associate Partner based in North Star’s Phoenix, AZ office, was invited to speak to the AFA(S) or Association of Financial Advisors Singapore on Wednesday, May 31st, 2017. In a 3-hour presentation to over 70 people in attendance, Tsang’s presentation, titled “Advice Based Planning—The Future for Financial Advisor Representatives,” covered why the financial services profession is moving towards advice based planning and the importance of it.
The visit included a day of sessions focused on training, recruiting, marketing and more.
On June 16th, 2017, 15 associates from Generali Asia visited North Star Resource Group’s headquarters in Minneapolis, MN for a day of learning more about North Star’s culture, operations and background. Generali Asia is one of the largest financial services firms throughout Asia, with presences in 10 markets, including China, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, among others.
The team brings a combined thirty years of experience in the Medicare industry to North Star Resource Group.
North Star Resource Group officially launched a Medicare Supplement Division on Monday, July 17th, 2017. Based in North Star’s Minneapolis, MN headquarters, the team consists of Medicare Specialists Chris Abbott, Anne Pierce, and Jeremiah Wente, all veterans within the Medicare industry. In an industry that has become increasingly complex to navigate alone, the team will work with individuals across Minnesota to provide coverage to supplement Medicare.
A new logo and look has been unveiled, while North Star’s name, mission, purpose and values will remain unchanged.
North Star Resource Group has unveiled a new company logo, look and website design. The changes, a brand refresh, come after over 30 years of continuous use of the previous logo. The logo and look ultimately selected retains the image of a star, the focus of the previous logo, while also incorporating checkmarks. All marketing materials and mediums, including the corporate website, have been updated to reflect the brand refresh.
The event benefited awareness and research efforts for Alzheimer’s disease.
Stop Alzheimer’s Now (SAN), a nonprofit organization founded in 2013 by Senior Vice President Shaun McDuffee, hosted the 2nd Annual 10K Walk & Fun Run in Minneapolis, MN on July 22, 2017. Participants started and finished at the Urban Growler Brewing Company in St. Paul, MN. SAN is committed to increasing Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia awareness through walking 3,652 miles across the United States. To date, they have raised nearly $300,000 and walked over 800 miles.
The division brings the expertise necessary to effectively manage clients’ risks and protect their futures.
North Star Resource Group officially launched a Property & Casualty Division, Borealis Insurance Services, on Tuesday, August 15th, 2017. Based in North Star’s Minneapolis headquarters, the division is headed by Director Jim Babusek. As an independent agency, Borealis will have access to many of the industry’s premier carriers and the ability to find the best value for their clients.
Sitek has been with North Star for 21 years, most recently serving as Vice President of Long-Term Health Care and Insurance Brokerage.
Chris Sitek, CLTC®, CASL®, CLU®, ChFC®, RHU®, REBC®, has been named Vice President of Life Business Development at North Star Resource Group. This is a new position at North Star which will serve as a catalyst and champion for providing effective life insurance solutions. Sitek will work in conjunction with North Star’s financial advisors to ensure their clients have the most appropriate coverages in place.
Vander Bloemen hosted the 4th Annual Liz Vander Bloemen Charitable Golf Event on July 17, 2017.
Brett Vander Bloemen, Financial Consultant and Partner at North Star Resource Group, once again successfully raised $100,000 to go towards Alzheimer’s disease research through the 4th Annual Liz Vander Bloemen Charitable Golf Event. The Scott Richards North Star Charitable Foundation once again partnered with Vander Bloemen for the event. With their matching gift, Vander Bloemen was once again able to present a $100,000 check to Dr. Ron Peterson of the Mayo Clinic’s Alzheimer’s Research Center in Rochester, MN.
Vaughn was one of ten rising stars selected for The American College of Financial Services’ award.
Laura Vaughn, CFP®, Partner at North Star Resource, was announced as a recipient of The American College of Financial Services’ 2017 Millennial Advisor Award. Ten millennial financial advisors were chosen for this year’s awards, which honor financial advisors under the age of 35 who have made a significant impact within their profession.
The winners of Minnesota Business magazine’s 2018 Community Impact Awards will be announced at a ceremony on February 22, 2018.
Minnesota Business magazine announced the finalists for their 2018 Community Impact Awards, including North Star Resource Group for “Best in Class: 101-300 employees” and North Star CEO Ed Deutschlander for “Paragon of Leadership.” The awards honor Minnesota-based businesses, organizations, nonprofits, initiatives and individuals making a significant impact in their communities. All finalists will be honored and winners will be announced at a ceremony on February 22, 2018.
This is the 13th consecutive year that the Scott Richards North Star Charitable Foundation has hosted the event.
The Scott Richards North Star Charitable Foundation donated bikes, helmets and volunteer hours to members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities at a holiday party held at the Saint Paul RiverCentre on December 15, 2017. To date, the Foundation has given away over 4,500 bikes to youth in the Twin Cities communities.
