Ben Setterlund understands that dealing with money can be a stressful part of life. As a Financial Advisor based in Minneapolis, he and his business partner, Andy Tate, do their best to alleviate that stress through education and humor.  Ben works with a client base largely consisting of physicians who have been in practice for 10+ years as well as retirees. His practice operates on accountability, education and transparency. With clients, Ben’s strategy is to take an inventory of their current state, help them decide where they would like to be and lay out a flight plan to get them positioned well for a secure and efficient journey.

“Investor behavior determines success more than the investment.”

Ben’s grandparents bought him a stock when he was 6 years old. This sparked his curiosity in the concepts of compound wealth and delayed gratification. This curiosity eventually turned into a career in advising where he now enjoys the coaching aspect of it. He believes the goal of his job is to help maximize the happiness of his clients and their families through operating as the household CFO, helping them to pursue their goals in a timely, efficient manner.

Ben and Andy have three wings to their practice: Phase 1 – Building a foundation; Phase 2 – Tax minimization* and asset accumulation; and Phase 3 – Distribution strategies and Social Security. Ben is a designated CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Professional and a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA). Through these designations in addition to his experience, Ben is able to assist clients throughout many life transitions, including the unexpected ones like divorce. Ben and Andy conduct numerous seminars on various topics throughout the Midwest, having previously presented at the Missouri State Medical Association, Truman Hospital, the University of Minnesota, Children’s Hospital Kansas City, and KUMED on the following topics:

  • Financial aspects of employer benefits*
  • Risk management
  • Wealth accumulation
  • Asset protection Strategies*

Ben is a member of the Financial Planning Association (FPA) of Minnesota. He has received the Gold Finance Award recognizing community service, has been distinguished as a Court of the Table member of the Million Dollar Round Table, which is recognized internationally as the standard of excellence in the life insurance and financial services business, and has received North Star’s Stonecutter Award (2005), which recognizes service to the financial industry.

A graduate of the University of St. Thomas, Ben received a BA in Finance. Outside of work, he volunteers at Big Brother/Big Sister, Mount Olivet Church, and also mentors those interested in financial advising as a career. He is originally from Duluth, MN, now residing in downtown Minneapolis with his dog, Goldy.  Ben’s hobbies include learning piano, taking pottery classes, trying to break 90 on the golf course, hiking, yoga, marathons, skiing, brewing, shuffleboard, and meditation.
