Market Volatility is like Airplane Turbulence

Who likes turbulence on an airplane?

No one—it’s frightening because it feels like the airplane could fall out of the sky at any moment.

But whether we understand the science of lift or not, we know that’s not likely to happen.

The turbulence is a period of discomfort that will pass.

And the worst thing we could do is to panic and jump out of the plane, or burst into the cockpit to try and steer the plane ourselves

The same is true for volatility in the market. Those sharp swings up and down in the value of your savings during periods of uncertainty can and will make you feel uncomfortable.

For some reason when we experience turbulence in our portfolios, we feel we need to do something—like buying or selling

What we need to acknowledge is that feeling uncomfortable is okay, acting on that discomfort without careful consideration is not.

A good financial advisor will check in with you to assess your individual situation and very likely may advise you to stay strapped into your seat until this bout of market turbulence passes.

If your advisor hasn’t reached out to check in with you over the past year, I’d love to schedule a meeting
