About The Scott Richards North Star Charitable Foundation
(Scott Richards NSCF):

The Scott Richards North Star Charitable Foundation (SRNSCF) embraces what the “foundation” of our 102 year old firm, North Star Resource Group, stands for—serving others. The word foundation means “base” and the base of our advisors, team members and leadership teams is serving. Our advisors serve their clients, our team members serve the advisors, leadership serves both and all of us together serve the greater community at large which is the focus of The SRNSCF.

North Star is a proud supporter of the following charities through The SRNSCF.

Cystic Fibrosis

Ataxia

Myelofibrosis

Bikes for Kids

Bikes for Kids, A Non Profit Public benefit Foundation, aims to help boys and girls ages 6-10. Many of the children come from broken homes where one or both parents may be missing, out of a job, or unsure of where the next meal is coming from. Through this program bikes, locks, helmets, and baskets are given to children in need at a carnival type event planned especially for them and their families. Since 2004 North Star Resource Group has given away over 2,000 bikes and helmets to disadvantaged youth.

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is often first suspected when a lump is felt or when an abnormal area is found on a mammogram. Most of the time, these suspicious areas do not turn out to be cancer, but the only way to know for sure is through follow-up tests. Understanding what these tests are and how to interpret their results can help a woman take control of her situation and pick the course of action that is best for her. What is Ataxia?

The word, “ataxia”, comes from the Greek word, “a taxis” meaning “without order or in coordination.” The Medline plus Merriam-Webster Medical Dictionary defines ataxia (a-tak-se-a) as, “An inability to coordinate muscular movements that is symptomatic of some nervous disorders.” The word ataxia is often used to describe a symptom of incoordination which can be associated with infections, injuries, other diseases, or degenerative changes in the central nervous system. Ataxia is also used to denote a group of specific degenerative diseases of the nervous system called the hereditary and sporadic ataxias which are the National Ataxia Foundation’s primary emphases. Myelofibrosis

Myelofibrosis is a chronic form of leukemia. It causes secondary scarring or “fibrosis” in the bone marrow. Typically people develop myelofibrosis around age 60. The disease can lead to progressive bone marrow dysfunction and anemia, and decreases in other key blood cells such as infection-fighting white blood cells and blood-clotting platelets. For more information about myelofibrosis visit www.mayoclinic.org/myelofibrosis/index.html.

Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States. A defective gene causes the body to produce an abnormally thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. These thick secretions also obstruct the pancreas, preventing digestive enzymes from reaching the intestines to help break down and absorb food. Alzheimer’s

To continue to assist with Alzheimer's prevention, the SRNSCF recently created the Scott Richard's North Star Alzheimer's Disease Prevention Research Fund. In association with the Minnesota Medical Foundation, this fund will support research efforts aimed at preventing Alzheimer's disease through the University of Minnesota Medical School's N. Bud Grossman Center for Memory Research and Care. The funds are currently led by Dr. Karen Ashe as the principal researcher and head of the University's Center for Memory Research and Care. This important research effort into the cause and treatment of Alzheimer's disease is being funded by a gift of $250,000 from the SRNSCF and a matching gift of $200,000 from the Securian Foundation.

These efforts would not be possible without the combined commitment of the entire North Star family of team members and advisors from all across the country.
